Description of the project :
It consists in travelling up and down the USA to find Afro-Americans who witnessed the antisegregationist demonstrations of the 1950s and
1960s, and took part in the numerous Civil Rights marches.
It will, more precisely, consist in collecting testimonies of Black activists who demonstrated with Martin Luther King in favour of the
Civil Rights Movement, in order to shoot a video documentary.
Therefore, I will have to travel the USA from North to South to collect information about Martin Luther King and his fight.
During my tour of the USA, I will stop off in New York City, Boston, Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans, Montgomery, Selma, Atlanta and
Washington, among other cities.
First, my aim will be to collect anecdotes and testimonies on that historical period and to tell the personal stories of the men and women
who sometimes gave their lives to gain freedom and equality.
Secondly, the aim of the documentary will be to show the changes in the condition of Black Americans since that period. What has effectively
changed? What progress has been made? In fact, although the Afro-American population have won battles as regards civil rights and citizenship (notably thanks to the actions led by Martin Luther
King), they are still one of the poorest population in the USA.
To conclude, I will establish a link with current affairs, notably the election of Barack Obama as the new leader of the American nation and
first Black American president. How can the personality of the 44th president of the USA drastically change the everyday lives of millions of Afro-Americans (in their search for jobs, in the way
they are considered by the police, as regards their salaries...)?
When I come back, I will give an account of my research and journey in a video documentary. Its screening could be followed by debates.
